Microfilm copies of original holograph letters written by Thompson to his wife, Jane. Three letters written before his tenure with the 20th Iowa Infantry discuss trying to move arms by boat from Keokuk, Iowa to Hannibal, Missouri. Bad circumstances in Missouri prompted a return to Keokuk with plans to travel with the arms to Council Bluffs by train.

Thompson of Marion, Iowa served with the 20th Iowa Infantry regiment during the Civil War. He was appointed Major on August 1, 1862. In December 1862 he was severely wounded at Prairie Grove, Arkansas and on May 18, 1864 he resigned from service. From the description of William G.
